Ahmed Elmagarmid, Ph.D.

Ahmed K. Elmagarmid is Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University and Executive Director of the Qatar Computing Research Institute. Most recently Dr. Elmagarmid served as Director of both the Indiana Center for Database Systems and the Cyber Center at Purdue University’s Discovery Park. Early in his career, in 1988, he received the National Science Foundation’s Presidential Young Investigator award from President Ronald Reagan. The Ohio State University (1993) and the University of Dayton (1995) have both named him among their distinguished alumni. He is a fellow of the IEEE and an ACM distinguished scientist. His expertise is in database technology, data integration and quality.
Dr. Elmagarmid is the editor-in-chief of Distributed and Parallel Databases: an International Journal and is on editorial board of six journals. He has chaired and served on several program committees. He was the general chair of the ACM SIGMOD conference in 2010.
During the acquisition of Compaq by Hewlett-Packard, Dr. Elmagarmid served as a chief scientist in HP’s Office of Strategy and Technology. While at HP, he was responsible for the corporate CTO office’s software strategy and contributed to HP’s innovations such as cross-company roadmap initiatives. He has also served on the HP technology council. Dr. Elmagarmid works as an industry consultant in the areas of database systems and cyber infrastructure. He has consulted (among many others) for Telcordia Technology, Bellcore, IBM,CSC, Harris, D. H. Brown and Associates, MCC, Bell Northern Research, Molecular Design Labs, and UniSql.
Dr. Elmagarmid holds a Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Ohio State University.
